Indications

Adult Dosing

Zinc deficiency

25-50 mg elemental zinc PO once daily

6-12 weeks

Wilson's disease (maintenance)

50 mg elemental zinc TDS (150 mg/day)

Take 1 hour before meals

Common cold (within 24h onset)

Zinc acetate 13.3 mg lozenge every 2-3 hours while awake

Until symptoms resolve

Maximum daily dose: 150 mg elemental zinc/day (therapeutic); 40 mg/day (supplement)

Pediatric Dosing

Age Range: All ages
Dose: WHO Diarrhea Protocol: <6 months: 10 mg elemental zinc/day × 14 days. ≥6 months: 20 mg/day × 14 days. Premature neonates: 0.3 mg/kg/day
Max/day: 20 mg/day (paediatric); 150 mg/day (Wilson's disease adults)

Zinc reduces diarrhea duration and severity by ~24% (WHO data). Mandatory supplementation with ORS in children per IAP guidelines.
